DIAGNOSING DRY EYE

DIAGNOSING DRY EYE

As members of the Dry Eye Institute of Canada, our Calgary optometrists follow a specific protocol for diagnosing and treating dry eye. During your dry eye consultation appointment(s), your optometrist will get a history of your symptoms and their severity. If additional testing is required, our optometrists have access to the latest technology in dry eye diagnostics and treatment.

Additional Testing May Include;

Corneal Evaluation - Examining the cornea. This includes measuring tear meniscus height, tear film break-up time, and tear consistency.

Lid Evaluation - Examining the eyelid margins and glands for conditions such as Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). A comprehensive lid evaluation may include LipiView® or LipiScan® digital imaging and meibum expressions.

LipiView® / LipiScan®

LipiView® and LipiScan® provide an accurate digital image of the tear film. These non-invasive instruments help to determine the level of dry eye a patient has. LipiView® is also able to measure the content and quality of the lipid layer and provide insight into a patient’s blinking habits.

Meibum Expressions

A meibum expression can help detect Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). During the procedure, the optometrist will apply pressure to the eyelid (sometimes using a tool such as a paddle) to express the contents of the meibomian glands.

If the meibomian glands are healthy, clear oily meibum will excrete after a few seconds of applying pressure to the eyelid. Thick and discoloured meibum indicates MGD.
