Purpose of Dry Eye Institute of Canada

The purpose of the Dry Eye Institute of Canada is to help doctors formulate proper diagnosis of dry eye syndrome then finding the most suitable treatment options for each patients' specific case. At Dr. Bishop & Associates we are always looking for the newest technology in treatment to give our patients the best options available.

As members of the Dry Eye Institute of Canada our Calgary optometrists have developed a specific protocol for managing and treating dry eye syndrome. Some of these steps include:

  • Finding out the patients symptom history. It is very important to find out how often dry eye symptoms are occurring and what the severity of the symptoms are. Also, to establish how motivated the patient is in managing their dry eye syndrome.

  • Examine the patients' lid margins and glands in the eyelids for things like blepharitis or Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD).

  • To pay special attention to the tear layer during the examination. Our doctors can do this by looking at the tear meniscus height and tear film break-up time, any evidence of fluorescein staining on the cornea and tear consistency, looking at the thickness, debris, measuring lipid oil layer and sebaceous secretions.

  • Perform further tests to measure the tear production. Meibography may also be done which is the imaging of your meibomian glands.

  • Once our dry eye experts have established that a dry eye condition exists, the treatment goal is to create a normal tear film by increasing lubricity, increasing aqueous production and decreasing inflammation, which can be done by a combination of different treatment options.
